I’ve been trying to write my review of Michelle Obama’s incredible memoir, Becoming, for weeks, but I felt I wasn’t doing the book justice. I read this back in November and finished all 400+ pages in less than a week. I read before bed, I read during naps, I even read at the dinner table while my kids were eating their dinner. I could not put it down!
I was a little nervous before I started reading Becoming because many of the “celebrity” memoirs I’ve read were just ok. They often have great stories to tell, but lack the skill to actually write a compelling memoir. I always finish them, but don’t find myself bragging about them. But I could brag about this book all day long! Not only does Michelle Obama have an amazing story to tell, she tells it beautifully! I was so inspired by her story and I was inspired as a writer because she was so honest and real in telling it.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good memoir. Even if you don’t like memoirs, you may enjoy listening to the audiobook version (it’s read by the author!). I believe you’ll love this book even if you aren’t into politics, but if you are, you’ll appreciate the behind-the-scenes look at the campaign trail and life in the White House for the president’s family. In fact, after reading this, I have a goal to read more memoirs by former first ladies. It’s easy to forget how much they have to sacrifice in order to support their husbands, and protect their children, on the journey to and through the White House.
I could go on and on, but I’ll leave it at this: Becoming was the best book of 2018 for me. I gave it as a gift to my mother-in-law and my grandmother for Christmas and I had to stop myself from giving it to every woman in my family. I hope you will all go to Amazon or Barnes & Noble or your local indie bookstore or library or Audible and get this book today. You won’t regret it!
